The Magpies
by Alexandru Kiritescu
National Theatre Bucharest - "Ion Caramitru" Hall
January 13, 2025, 8:00 PM
You cannot remain indifferent to a show on such a text as Kiritescu's "The Magpies."
At first, you laugh to tears. And then you freeze because you realize you're laughing at yourself, your family, this nation. "The Magpies" are the perfect characterization of Romanianism in its harshest, most intimate, and unmasked moments. The produced show succeeds in capturing this atmosphere of morbid national tragi-comedy very well. The scenography, well-thought and easy to handle, with strong interwar Romanian accents regarding the house decorations, and the soundtrack contribute greatly to building the environment in which the Duduleanu family conducts their infamously local life.
You will rediscover four outstanding actresses in the four main female roles: Maia Morgenstern (an incredibly believable Aneta Duduleanu, with strong but not exaggerated comedic accents), Carmen Tănase (an exceptional Zoia, charming, yet with stage expression power), Virginia Rogin (one of the most refined, complex, and masterful actresses, here with a brilliant role as Lena) and Adriana Trandafir (a mountain of talent, passion, and dedication, crafting with care an unparalleled Fräulein to date).
The love triangle, brilliantly portrayed by Diana Cavallioti (a sensual Wanda, feminine and with a boiling inner strength), Andreea Chirițescu (an astonishingly self-possessed Margareta) and Tudor Istodor (an authentic and original Mircea), cannot be forgotten. Gabriel Fătu, Ioana Ancea, and Ion Ionuț Ciocia have a very important contribution in the three comedic roles of Ianache, Colette, and Georges Duduleanu, Aneta's sons and daughter-in-law. Not least, in the small but very eloquent role of Zamfira, Mariangela Coldea shines through her joyful performance, bringing forward a role usually overlooked. And all this theatrical symphony is conducted with a sure hand by director Gelu Colceag.
Congratulations also go to Imelda Manu, the set designer, Ioana Colceag and Geanina Punkosti, the creators of the special and time-appropriate costumes, as well as to Teodora Petre, assistant director, who ensures the smooth running of each performance.
