THE NATIONAL OPERETTA AND MUSICAL THEATER "ION DACIAN"

THE GYPSY BARON

November 2, 2024, at 18:00

"The Gypsy Baron" is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss Jr., based on a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer. It premiered at Theater an der Wien, Vienna, on October 24, 1885. In Romania, the operetta was first performed at the National Theater in Bucharest on January 9, 1890.

The action takes place in the first half of the 18th century, on the once-flourishing estates of the exiled Barinkay. The castle is now a ruin; the neighbor Zsupan, a former pig farmer, is prospering by exploiting Barinkay's properties. The imperial amnesty brings the young Sandor Barinkay (the son of the exiled man) back into the limelight, who returns home to reclaim his possession. Aware that he has to account for the plunder, Zsupan proposes that Barinkay marry his daughter. However, the young man is fascinated by the beauty of the gypsy girl Saffi, whom he meets at night in the abandoned castle. Returning from the market, the gypsies acclaim the son of their master as their leader... The action continues and complicates with intrigues, love, war, and a victorious return. A happy ending finds Sandor beside Saffi and his "subjects" who have chosen him as their leader.

About the National Operetta and Musical Theater "Ion Dacian"

The National Operetta and Musical Theater "Ion Dacian" was founded in 1950 under the name of the State Operetta Theater. The theater is named after the famous tenor Ion Dacian, whose long career is associated with the Golden Age of Romanian Operetta.

From its beginnings, the Operetta has enjoyed a favorable reception from the Romanian public, particularly popular during the '70s and '80s.

In the new millennium, the Theater experienced a period of renewal and modernization. The changes mainly aimed at improving the quality of productions both artistically and technically, attracting new categories of audience (especially the young audience) and shaping a new image for the Operetta, highlighting both its rich tradition and new future projects, intended to transform the Theater into an important cultural center of the Capital.

The current repertoire of the National Operetta and Musical Theater "Ion Dacian" includes musicals, operettas, concerts, gala events, as well as seasonal performances.
