The Ravens
by Alexandru Kiritescu
National Theatre Bucharest - "Ion Caramitru" Hall
November 11, 2024, 8:00 PM
You cannot remain indifferent to such a show on the text of Kirițescu's “The Ravens”.
At first, you laugh with tears. And then you freeze because you realize you are laughing at yourself, your family, this nation. “The Ravens” perfectly characterizes Romanianism in its most brutal, intimate, and mask-less moments. And the produced show successfully captures this atmosphere of national macabre tragicomedy. The scenery, very well thought out and easy to handle, with strong interwar Romanian accents in terms of house decorations, as well as the soundtrack, greatly contribute to the construction of the environment in which the Duduleanu family leads their infamously local life.
You will rediscover 4 remarkable actresses in the 4 main female roles: Maia Morgenstern (a terribly credible Aneta Duduleanu, with strong yet not exaggerated comic accents), Carmen Tănase (an exceptional Zoia, sympathetic but also with scenic expressive power), Virginia Rogin (one of the most refined, complex, and masterful actresses, here with a phenomenal role in Lena) and Adriana Trandafir (a mountain of talent, passion, and dedication, meticulously creating an unprecedented Fräulein).
The love triangle, brilliantly interpreted by Diana Cavallioti (a sensual, feminine Wanda with simmering inner strength), Andreea Chirițescu (an astonishingly self-possessed Margareta), and Tudor Istodor (an authentic and original Mircea), cannot be left unmentioned. Gabriel Fătu, Ioana Ancea, and Ion Ionuț Ciocia play crucial roles in the comedic parts of Ianache, Colette, and Georges Duduleanu, Aneta's sons and daughter-in-law. Last but not least, in the small but very telling role of Zamfira, Mariangela Coldea shines with the joy of playing, bringing a usually overlooked role into the spotlight. And this whole theatrical symphony is masterfully conducted by director Gelu Colceag.
Congratulations also go every time to Imelda Manu, the creator of the scenery, Ioana Colceag and Geanina Punkosti, the creators of the fantastic and period-appropriate costumes, as well as Teodora Petre, assistant director, who ensures the good run of each performance.
