The most performed comedy of playwright Aurel Baranga – "Siciliana" – is staged by director Toma Enache, in his latest performance.
The show "Siciliana" has a remarkable cast and extraordinary stage acting.
Fifi and Bebe are fresh graduates – she of Medicine, he of Agronomy – and have concluded that the only chance to overcome the policy of allocation – a future in a rural environment -, would be to perfect a marriage of convenience.
They want to deceive, thus, "the eyes of the system", but not the hearts of their true partners – Tiberiu and Muki. The game begins, the first moves are made on an invisible board, and each such move opens doors to surprising worlds. Check! And mate!
Tremendous success, over 60 years since the Bucharest premiere of the play "Siciliana"
The comedy "Siciliana" – written by Aurel Baranga – enjoys extraordinary success, even though more than 60 years have passed since the tremendous success it had at the Bucharest premiere.
People are still pieces on the chessboard of life, of love, regardless of the political system that governs us. Baranga has this skill of subtlety in words, meanings, humor. It is truly a sparkling comedy, says director Toma Enache, "I add the joy of working with an extraordinary team of actors".
"I start with the 'parents' Corina Dănilă and Adrian Păduraru, two actors I love and appreciate, who put their experience and talent into this show, alongside young and talented actors whom I chose from over 250 casting participants (Vlad Vîlciu, Ana Vîlcu / Iulia Bibu, Georgiana Ionescu / Teodora Daiana Păcurar, Dani Ionescu, Emanuel Varga). The comedy SICILIANA has the nostalgia scent of old Bucharest, which all of us who have been ensnared by the capital long for. Imagine how it would be that, after finishing university, you have to go somewhere in the countryside, in a forgotten village, far from family, friends, and especially, far from the charm of Bucharest", says the director.
The play "Siciliana" was a successful production of Romanian dramaturgy of the '60s, a position consolidated for decades afterward. The figure of "over 500 performances" at the National Theatre "I.L. Caragiale" in Bucharest is illustrative in this regard.
