Highlights

Toma Enache, the director of the film "ENESCU, Flayed Alive" was recently awarded the "Premio Cultura" at the cultural event "Leoni, Gattopardi di Sicilia", organized at Palazzo Donà dalle Rose in Venice.

The production is nominated for the trophy for original film music (signed by Sebastian Androne Nakanishi) at the International Sound&Film Music Festival in Croatia, one of the top three festivals of this kind in the world.

On October 26, the film will have its international premiere at Harmony Gold Theatre in Los Angeles, being in the official selection of the ARPA Film Festival, now in its 27th edition.

Director Toma Enache: "This film aims to bring to the forefront not only the genius of composer George Enescu but also his human side. I hope that through this production, we bring the audience closer to Enescu’s soul and make him loved as he deserves. Beyond the genius composer is the man Enescu, whom the public can discover in this film. I hope our film contributes to taming some of our fellow men, something Enescu sought to achieve through his music. Perhaps not only to tame them but also to make them love him as he deserves." (Toma Enache)

The film features a remarkable cast, with Mircea Dragoman as George Enescu and Theodora Sandu as Princess Maruca, alongside well-known actors such as Cezara Dafinescu, Manuela Hărăbor, Adrian Titieni, Cristian Sofron, Kira Hagi, Pavel Ulici, Filip Ristovski, Erica Moldovan, Codrin Dănilă, and the late Constantin Codrescu.

The costumes are created by Italian Stefano Nicolao, renowned for his work on Oscar-winning productions, and the music reunites works by George Enescu and original compositions by Sebastian Androne-Nakanishi, named "Composer of the Year 2022" at the International Classical Music Awards.

The soundtrack is performed by the National Orchestra of France, under the baton of Maestro Cristian Măcelaru, artistic director of the George Enescu Festival, and the National Radio Orchestra of Romania, conducted by Maestro Horia Andreescu. Additionally, violinist Alexandru Tomescu adds a distinctive note to this sound production. As a unique element, the soundtrack includes an original music fragment performed by George Enescu on violin and Dinu Lipatti on piano.

FILM REVIEW

ENESCU, Flayed Alive

Critic Gustavo Coletti for Times of Cinema:

"When I finished watching 'ENESCU, Flayed Alive' I immediately searched for the biography, not of Enescu, but of director Toma Enache, because I was surprised by the quality of the film. I believe I finally understood George Enescu after watching the two-hour film. Toma Enache has directed four feature films, starting in 2013, and has staged many plays in Bucharest. He has always been appreciated for the quality of his projects.

The film's credits are visually fascinating. Statues that disintegrate as representations of an impending tragedy. I had access to Enescu through the director: a brilliant violinist and composer planning to compose an opera, in love with a married princess who is also a mother. A true story, very close to fiction.

I very much liked the reconstitution of a fascinating period, as we are talking about the early years of the 20th century, especially in Romania. Attention to detail in costumes and scenography does not go unnoticed, and the most intense moments generate an eclectic vibe between cinema and theater, shining like explosions, sometimes seeming supernatural.

It's hard to find so much respect for the spirit of classic narratives in modern cinema. The film's style and atmosphere remind us of the great masters of Italian or German cinema. Toma Enache makes no compromises in the pursuit of excellence.

The acting is good, but the directorial presence is felt at every moment. At times, the impeccably chosen lights and camera movements remind us of blockbuster productions.”
