NATIONAL OPERETTA AND MUSICAL THEATER "ION DACIAN"
THE GYPSY BARON
January 26, 2025, 6:00 PM
"The Gypsy Baron" is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II, based on a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer. The premiere took place at Theater an der Wien, in Vienna, on October 24, 1885. In Romania, the operetta was first performed at the National Theater in Bucharest, on January 9, 1890.
The action takes place in the first half of the 18th century, on the once-flourishing estates of the exiled Barinkay. The castle is now a ruin; the neighbor Zsupan, a former pig farmer, thrives by exploiting Barinkay's properties. An imperial amnesty brings the young Sandor Barinkay (son of the exiled) to the forefront, who returns home to be reinstated in possession. Knowing he must account for the plunder, Zsupan proposes Barinkay marries his daughter. However, the young man is fascinated by the beauty of the gypsy girl Saffi, whom he encounters at night in the abandoned castle. Returning from the market, the gypsies acclaim the landowner's son as their baron... The action continues and becomes complicated with intrigue, love, war, and a victorious return. The happy ending finds Sandor alongside Saffi and his "subjects" who have chosen him as their baron.
