NATIONAL THEATER OF OPERETTA AND MUSICAL „ION DACIAN”

THE GYPSY BARON

February 23, 2025, at 18:00

„The Gypsy Baron” is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II, based on a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer. The premiere took place at Theater an der Wien, in Vienna, on October 24, 1885. In Romania, the operetta was first performed at the National Theater in Bucharest on January 9, 1890.

The action takes place in the first half of the 18th century, on the once-flourishing estates of the exiled Barinkay. The castle is now a ruin; the neighbor Zsupan, a former pig breeder, thrives by exploiting Barinkay's properties. The imperial amnesty brings to the forefront the young Sandor Barinkay (the exiled son) who returns home to be reinstated. Aware that he must account for the theft, Zsupan proposes to Barinkay to marry his daughter. However, the young man is fascinated by the beauty of the gypsy Saffi whom he meets at night in the abandoned castle. Returning from the fair, the gypsies acclaim the master's son as their voivode… The action continues and complicates with intrigues, love, war, and a victorious return. The happy ending finds Sandor next to Saffi and alongside his "subjects" who elected him voivode.

About the National Theater of Operetta and Musical „Ion Dacian”

The National Theater of Operetta and Musical „Ion Dacian” was founded in 1950 under the name of the State Operetta Theater. The theater is named after the famous tenor Ion Dacian, whose long career is associated with the Golden Age of Romanian Operetta.

Since its beginnings, the Operetta has been warmly received by the public in Romania, enjoying significant popularity especially during the 1970s and 1980s.

In the new millennium, the theater has undergone a period of renewal and modernization. The changes mainly focused on increasing the quality of productions in artistic and technical terms, attracting new audience categories (especially young audiences), and shaping a new image of the Operetta that illustrates both its rich tradition and new projects for the future, aimed at transforming the Theater into an important cultural center of the Capital.

In the current repertoire of the National Theater of Operetta and Musical „Ion Dacian” are included musicals, operettas, concerts, gala events, as well as seasonal performances.
