„The Flying Dutchman” (in German, „Die Fledermaus”) is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss – son (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899), with a libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée based on the vaudeville „Le Réveillon” written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. The premiere took place in Vienna, at „Theater an der Wien”, on April 5, 1874.
Doctor Falke, the friend of Mr. Eisenstein, devises a farce to take revenge on him for a previous incident: after a masquerade ball, Eisenstein left Falke drunk in a public garden, dressed in a bat costume, to the ridicule of the crowd, which is why Falke became known as „The Bat”.

About the National Operetta and Musical Theatre „Ion Dacian”
The National Operetta and Musical Theatre „Ion Dacian” was founded in 1950 under the name of the State Operetta Theatre. The theatre is named after the famous tenor Ion Dacian, whose long career is associated with the Golden Age of Romanian Operetta.
