REBECCA

National Operetta and Musical Theater Hall „Ion Dacian”

(Bd. Octavian Goga, no. 1)

June 21, 2025, at 18:00

A new premiere at the National Operetta and Musical Theater „Ion Dacian”: „Rebecca”

REBECCA
Musical by Sylvester Levay & Michael Kunze

„Rebecca”, one of the most successful productions staged by the Sylvester Levay team
(music) – Michael Kunze (libretto), Grammy Award winners and creators of the famous
productions „Mozart!”, „Elisabeth” and „Marie Antoinette” premiered at the National
Operetta and Musical Theater „Ion Dacian” directed by Attila Béres on June 16
2023.
The show is based on the story of the homonymous novel written by Daphne du Maurier in 1938, which made the English author one of the most famous writers of her time. Like other works of the author, such as „Jamaica Inn” or „Birds”, „Rebecca” was adapted for the big screen by the Oscar-winning director Alfred Hitchcock, becoming one of his most well-known productions.

The musical premiered in Vienna, at the Raimund Theater, on September 28, 2006, directed by Francesca Zambello, and quickly became an international success, being performed with full houses for more than three consecutive years. In the following years, the musical was staged with the same success in Japan, Finland, Hungary, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Serbia, and the Czech Republic. The premiere is scheduled for September 4, 2023, at Charing Cross Theatre in London, directed by Alejandro Bonatto.
The musical first brought to Romania by the National Operetta Theater „Ion Dacian” in the 2010-2011 season will be performed for the first time in the new hall of the National Operetta and Musical Theater „Ion Dacian”, on Blvd. Octavian Goga No.1, joining the famous titles of the current repertoire, among which we mention: My Fair Lady, Voievodul Èšiganilor, Marco Polo's Secret, Kiss me, Kate!, Victoria and her Hussar, or Èšara Surâsului.

Synopsis
The events are presented from the perspective of a naive young woman without material means, „Ich”. Working as an escort for a wealthy woman from America, who is on vacation on the French Riviera, she meets Lord Maxim de Winter, a very wealthy Englishman, who quickly becomes her husband. After marrying, she accompanies him to the enigmatic and unfriendly house on the Manderley estate, where it seems that the spirit of Rebecca, the first Mrs. de Winter, who died a year ago in a mysterious accident at sea, is still present. Viewed with suspicion and treated maliciously by Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, whose devotion to Rebecca seems to be pathological, the very young lady of Manderley feels increasingly overwhelmed by her new life, while her husband, Maxim, seems to sink deeper into the dark secrets of the house. An unexpected event disturbs the lives of the characters even more, threatening to reveal unforeseen mysteries.
