MAITREYI
«Maitreyi» (1933) by Mircea Eliade is a love novel, inspired by a real story experienced by the author in India, between 1929-1931.
The book features Allan as the main character, an English engineer (but in fact Eliade's alter ego), who arrives in Kolkata (Calcutta) to work. Here he meets Maitreyi Devi, the daughter of the Indian engineer Narendra Sen — a 16-year-old girl, of a special beauty, with a melancholic look, a lot of sensitivity, intelligence and a poetic nature.
A show with established and well-known actors comes now with authentic feelings and pure emotions, to stage the conflict between reason and feeling. The impossible love story between Maitreiy and Allan is about the West and the East, about defying social conventions through total love. A love that appears from nowhere, is composed and then suddenly and abusively decomposes due to society, family and cultural differences, leaving behind years of unspoken and unfulfilled words and feelings. Is it good? Is it bad? We don't know! But it certainly remains incomprehensible for our days.
