Beggars at the Gate of Freedom
House of Culture of the Trade Unions Ramnicu Valcea

For the world we live in, the lack of material things is a tragedy. But there is a small category, that of the homeless, those who live on the streets, who seems to be much happier than a very large part of the wealthy world. Their joy is given, perhaps, by the lack of all worries, needs and absolute freedom. They can do what they want and when they want. They are not conditioned, they are not constrained, they are not dissatisfied with shortages... they are simply happy. Or, is it just an illusion? Do they also dream of getting rich? They also have their dissatisfactions, small or large, it is obvious. But how do they manifest themselves? We cannot know, maybe we will never know if they have traumas that weigh on their soul that push them to such a life, or is it a simple choice, a desire of their own to live in this way... We can never know...

🗽 "Beggars at the Gate of Freedom" is the story of some friends, a Hungarian and a Transylvanian, who meet in New York in an attempt to taste absolute freedom and to forget the worries and disappointments of the past. Friends for almost seven years, they go through many trials of life, more or less comical, more or less tragic. They share a bench together, they share beliefs, dissatisfactions and joys. Urged by a Mexican woman less anchored in reality, they desecrate some graves and even steal a corpse to receive about 20 dollars as a reward. The friendship of the two, however bizarre it may seem in the eyes of the world, falters after more than seven years and may even fall apart. Around them gravitate other beggars, each with their own story, composing a tragicomic spectacle of the world in which we live. The Romanian - Jewish Transylvanian, the Hungarian – Catholic born and raised in Romania represents the perfect recipe for a sincere and devoted friendship that makes them "share" beliefs and philosophies about life. Surprises appear throughout the play, the beggars seem to have a world of their own far from the "real" world. But, really! What is the "real" world!? Is there absolute freedom!? Or is there only an illusion created over time?! Are they happier?! Do they have dissatisfactions regarding the life they live?! Do they have a plan for the future?! Do they do something to change their lives, to maintain them or to improve them?! These are just a few questions that come to mind now in an attempt to know and recognize their world.
