The Sparrows

by Alexandru Kiritescu

National Theater Bucharest - "Ion Caramitru" Hall

April 7, 2025, 8:00 PM

You cannot remain indifferent to a performance based on a text like “The Sparrows” by Kirițescu.

At first, you will laugh with tears. And then you will be petrified because you realize that you are laughing at yourself, at your family, at this people. “The Sparrows” are the perfect characterization of Romanianism in its most brutal, intimate, and maskless moments. The produced show manages to capture this morbid national tragicomedy atmosphere very well. The scenography, well thought out and easy to maneuver, with strong interwar Romanian accents in the house decorations, as well as the soundtrack, greatly contribute to the environment in which the Duduleanu family leads their infamously native lives.

You will rediscover 4 remarkable actresses in the 4 main female roles: Maia Morgenstern (a terrifically believable Aneta Duduleanu, with strong but unexaggerated comedic accents), Carmen Tănase (an exceptional Zoia, charming yet with strong theatrical expression), Virginia Rogin (one of the most refined, complex, and masterful actresses, here with a standout role as Lena), and Adriana Trandafir (a mountain of talent, passion, and dedication, meticulously crafting a never-before-seen Fräulein).

The love triangle cannot be forgotten, brilliantly portrayed by Diana Cavallioti (a sensual, feminine Wanda with a boiling inner strength), Andreea Chirițescu (an astonishingly self-assured Margareta), and Tudor Istodor (an authentic and original Mircea). Gabriel Fătu, Ioana Ancea, and Ion Ionuț Ciocia make a very important contribution in the three comedic roles of Ianache, Colette, and Georges Duduleanu, Aneta's sons and daughter-in-law. Last but not least, in the small but very expressive role of Zamfira, shines Mariangela Coldea, bringing to the forefront a role that is usually overlooked. And all this theatrical symphony is conducted surely by director Gelu Colceag.

Congratulations go every time to Imelda Manu, the creator of the scenography, Ioana Colceag and Geanina Punkosti, the creators of the exceptional costumes appropriate to the time of the action, as well as Teodora Petre, assistant director, who ensures the smooth running of each performance.
