The Merchant of Venice
"The Merchant of Venice" - One of Shakespeare's darkest comedies, in which the love story of Bassanio, the man who lost his fortune and who must borrow to be able to woo the woman he loves, is integrated into the much more dramatic story of the moneylender Shylock and his desire to obtain a pound of flesh from the Venetian merchant Antonio.
Also in Venice, also with a wedding, also with a lot of money... but the similarities with the mundane end here. For our Venice is an imagined one, and our story is not just about love and money, but rather about risk, bets, selling and buying of... souls.
We don't want to spoil the surprise, so we won't give you many details. We only tell you that above all and everything, above money transactions, goods, ships that sink and then reappear as saved by a miracle, above love transactions, above risky bets guaranteed with pounds of flesh or with the obligation of celibacy, above chests with ducats and old family jewelry, there is a merchant of souls who plays all the games...
