Carmen is an opera with music composed by Georges Bizet to a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, after the novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée.
Unlike Mérimée, Bizet chose to make Carmen the main character of this story, going against all the "moral barriers" that began to fall massively in his era.
The premiere of the opera took place at the "Opéra Comique" in Paris, on March 3, 1875, but it did not initially have the success expected by the composer, which greatly affected him.
The wounded pride and initial disappointment suffered by the French composer were brilliantly avenged posthumously, as today the opera Carmen is one of the most performed lyrical theater pieces that manages to win the stormy applause of audiences worldwide. The action of the novella and the opera takes place in the city of Seville, where with unprecedented realism, the tragic story of the soldier Don José, who fell prey to the charms of the gypsy Carmen, is depicted. Although he defies his family, compromises his career, and overcomes all limits of morality for the woman he loves, the soldier will end up killing her.
The duration of the performance is 2 hours, it has no intermissions and is performed in French with Romanian subtitles.
This performance was created as a branch of the opera genre that aims to lead to the development of considerable openness of the general public to the fascinating world of lyrical theater. Let yourself be carried away by the wave and be enchanted by this story of love full of intrigue, passion, jealousy, and revenge, alongside the beautiful Carmen and her soldier Don Jose, favorites of opera lovers.
