NATIONAL OPERETTA AND MUSICAL THEATER „ION DACIAN”
THE GYPSY PRINCE
May 10, 2025 at 18:00
„The Gypsy Prince” is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II, based on a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer. The premiere took place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna on October 24, 1885. In Romania, the operetta was represented for the first time at the National Theater in Bucharest, on January 9, 1890.
The action takes place in the first half of the 18th century, on the once flourishing estates of the exiled Barinkay. The castle is now in ruins; neighbor Zsupan, a former pig breeder, thrives by exploiting Barinkay's properties. A royal amnesty brings the young Sandor Barinkay (the son of the exiled) back into the spotlight as he returns home to reclaim his inheritance. Aware that he must account for the plunder, Zsupan proposes that Barinkay marry his daughter. However, the young man is captivated by the beauty of the gypsy Saffi, whom he meets at night in the abandoned castle. Returning from the fair, the gypsies acclaim the master's son as their prince... The action continues and complicates with intrigues, love, war, and a victorious return. The happy ending finds Sandor next to Saffi and among his "subjects" who have chosen him as their prince.
About the National Operetta and Musical Theater „Ion Dacian”
The National Operetta and Musical Theater „Ion Dacian” was founded in 1950 under the name of the State Operetta Theater. The theater is named after the famous tenor Ion Dacian, whose long career is associated with the Golden Age of Romanian Operetta.
From its beginnings, the Operetta has enjoyed a favorable reception from the audience in Romania, the genre experiencing particular popularity especially in the 70s and 80s.
In the new millennium, the Theater underwent a period of renewal and modernization. The changes mainly aimed to increase the artistic and technical quality of the productions, attract new categories of audience (especially young audiences), and shape a new image of the Operetta that illustrates both its rich tradition and new future projects, intended to transform the Theater into an important cultural center of the Capital.
The current repertoire of the National Operetta and Musical Theater „Ion Dacian” includes musicals, operettas, concerts, gala events, as well as seasonal performances.
