Luceafărul Hall (Ion Ghica St. no. 3)
September 19, 2023, 8:00 PM
Imagine a place where reality and fantasy mix, time is suspended, and the rules disappear. Think about what happens when you give up your masks and let yourself be guided by primal instincts. In this show, magic becomes the expression of hidden desires, and love, jealousy, power, and illusion become the forces that dictate the action.
On a night in midsummer, in Shakespeare's play, four young people venture into a forest to save or find true love. Their paths intersect with those of the fairies led by Titania and Oberon, a couple in whose quarrel Bottom, the star of a group of amateur actors, who rehearse a play wherever they can, will also be drawn. In our version, the mysterious night falls right over us, in contemporaneity, in the Hotel Atena, where Theseus is to marry Hippolyta. In this place, each room hides secrets, and the corridors become labyrinths of desires and illusions. The whole hotel becomes a universe in which the characters get lost and find themselves. Puck is a DJ, a master of rhythm and chaos, who mixes the music of the evening and, with it, the destinies of the characters. Titania and Oberon are two magnetic presences, contrasting energies that dominate and manipulate reality, and Bottom and his troupe are waiters at the hotel.
The entire staging preserves the energy of Shakespearean comedy, but brings an air of freshness through a modern, dynamic, and immersive approach. The show explores universal themes – love in all its forms, desire, chaos – in a contemporary context, highlighting how easily we can be fooled by our own emotions and the whims of fate.
An UNATC production, with the support of the Independent Luceafarul Theater.
