The Princess of the Circus (original title in German: ”Die Zirkusprinzessin”) is an operetta in three acts composed by Emmerich Kálmán with a libretto written by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald, which premiered on March 26, 1926, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
The action of the operetta revolves around the mysterious character "Mister X", whose true identity is unknown to anyone as he always wears a mask. In reality, he is Prince Fedja Palinski, who was exiled and disinherited by his uncle because he fell in love with his uncle's future wife, the beautiful and young Parisian princess Fedora. After Fedora Palinska became a widow, she went to Paris, and Prince Fedja Palinski entered the world of the circus, becoming the mysterious Mister X and the main attraction of the shows.
Following a plot with a happy ending, Mister X and Princess Fedora meet again and remain together. Some of these events take place in the wonderful and colorful world of the circus.
